What are waypoints?

Waypoints are the player's navigator for the player's storyline goals. They show you the optimal path to the goal, depending on the task. So, if you have forgotten where you should go and where to look for the necessary goal, you can always activate the waypoints by first tapping the task icon, and then tapping the magnifying glass icon next to the desired goal - and the waypoints will immediately build the optimal path to the goal.
